Members of the PracticeWise Community,
The Spring 2017 updates to the PracticeWise information resources are now available online.
Kudos
We are proud to announce that our president, Dr. Bruce Chorpita, was recently nominated as a candidate for president of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), an organization committed to evidence-based approaches to the enhancement of health and well-being. Voting runs throughout the month of April, so if you are a member of ABCT, please support Bruce by casting your vote and telling others. Even if you are not an ABCT member, consider showing your support by visiting and liking his campaign Facebook page, where you can read more about the election (https://www.facebook.com/ChorpitaABCT2017/).
Resource Updates
The PracticeWise Evidence Based Services Database (PWEBS) has expanded once again. There were not as many changes in the Strength of Evidence levels of treatment families this period, but some new families were introduced and a few families achieved new levels. Here is the brief summary:
Attention
Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Parent Management Training was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
Autism
The Social Skills treatment family improved to Best Support (Level 1).
Several variants of cognitive training approaches were tested but with unremarkable outcomes.
Attention Training was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
Cognitive Flexibility Training was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
Working Memory Training was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
Depression
The Social Skills treatment family improved to Minimal Support (Level 4).
Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Anger Control was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Parent Management Training was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
Mindfulness was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
Disruptive Behavior
The Problem Solving treatment family improved to Best Support (Level 1).
The Collaborative Problem Solving treatment family was renamed to Cooperative Problem Solving to minimize confusion of this treatment family with a specific treatment program. The Cooperative Problem Solving treatment family continued to achieve Good Support (Level 2).
Eating
To address greater differentiation in studies of family therapy, the treatment family assignments were restructured with the following effects:
The Family-Focused Therapy treatment family has achieved Good Support (Level 2).
The Family Therapy treatment family has achieved No Support (Level 5).
Traumatic Stress
The Exposure treatment family was reduced from Best Support (Level 1) to Good Support (Level 2). This unusual change was due to the reassignment of a protocol from the Exposure family to the Cognitive Behavior Therapy family based on additional information that cognitive practices were included in the protocol. This did not affect the strength of evidence level for Cognitive Behavior Therapy but reduced the evidence replicating the Exposure treatment family.
Expressive Play was introduced as a treatment family and achieved No Support (Level 5).
The Practitioner Guides were expanded to include a new practice guide for Insight Building: Emotion Identification.
Our collection of online courses has expanded to include practice courses for:
- Active Ignoring
- Activity Selection
- Narrative: Trauma
- Support Networking
- Time Out
We encourage you to check in periodically on all of our resources and continue to send us your suggestions and contributions.
